liver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Energy City Commission
FROM: Rebecca Haug, Environmental Administrator
DATE: November 21, 2007
SUBJECT: April 19, 2008 Energy Expo Update
The subcommittee has been making a lot of progress towards the 2008 Energy Expo.
The majority of the subcommittee members have decided that a keynote speaker is not
going to be part of the event as the ones available are too costly or they don't have the
name recognition. Instead, the plan is to focus on the students of Spectrum Charter
School showcasing the Science Fair Projects and having them conduct short films on
"How Saving Energy Affects Me." We're calling the science fair the "Energy Innovation
Contest" and the short films the "Energy Emmy's".
The Science Fair projects will be completed by the I I th graders who will be working in
teams of 2 so there will be 15 total submissions and then the Energy City
Commissioners will judge the projects down to the top 3. The top 3 will then present
their projects at the Expo. The grand prize will be working with a local utility for a day
and some other small prize.
The Short Film projects will be completed by the 9th and I Oth graders. There will be 90
films which will be judged by the city's cable producer, chief of police, city staff, and
school staff. The top I 0 will be displayed during the Expo. The top 3 will be winning
awards with the 7 honorees winning probably a ribbon. The top 10 will give brief
presentations of their films during the expo. There was also talk about having a People's
Choice Awards were the peers will judge the films. The school staff is trying to get
scholarships and then we'll have some other prizes for the students.
The Lion's Club has agreed to cater the Expo. They will be providing both breakfast
and lunch. We've asked that they be there at 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The fire station
break room will be used for the catering as there is an existing kitchen in the area and
will require people to circulate through the exhibitor area.
The subcommittee is still working on determining who will be providing the tent, tables,
chairs, etc. A schedule of the day's events is also being worked on. The Next
subcommittee meeting will be on Tuesday, December I I at 9:00 a.m. in the Uppertown
Conference Room at the Elk River City Hall.
