ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Heritage Preservation Commission
FROM: Rebecca Haug, Environmental Administrator
DATE: August 9, 2007
SUBJECT: 2007 Archaeological Dig
The Archaeological Dig was held the week-ends of July 20-22 and July 26-28, 2007. They were a
huge success! Approximately 50 volunteers were able to participate over both week-ends. This is
up by 20 people from last year's event. The tour group sizes for each day ranged from 15-30.
The news media gave us great coverage. KSTP TV and radio discussed the dig and the Star
Tribune had a very nice article about the dig on Friday, July 27. The Elk River Star News was
supposed to have an article in the Wednesday, August 01, 2007 paper but I'm sure it will be in
the August 8, 2007 paper. Staff will be sending out evaluations to all the volunteers and will
update you on the responses.
Several local businesses gave donations which always help to cover the costs of these events.
The following is a list of the donors and what they donated:
Waste Management $500.00
John Oliver & Assoc., Inc $250.00
The Bank of Elk River $100.00
Kathy Heaney, Sherburne Cty Atty $100.00
Town Mortgage, Inc. $100.00
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. $50.00 gift certificate
Target $50.00 gift certificate
Cub Foods Misc. Supplies
Diamond City Bread "
Elite Sanitation "
Elk River Chamber of Commerce "
Northbound & Westbound Liquor "
Panera Bread "
The hope is to continue the work at the Hoebelheinrich's in 2008. It is dependent upon whether the
Council approves funding and the University is able to match the funding. I am confident that we will
be able to continue this successful program in 2008. Thank you for helping make it a success!
