~'
ver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Bryan Adams, Utilities General Manager
FROM: Rebecca Haug, Environmental Administrator '~,~
DATE: August 26, 2008
SUBJECT: "Project Conserve" and Water Tower discussion at
September 9, 2008 Utility Commission meeting
Thank you for the opportunity to speak at your upcoming September Utility
Commission meeting. The two items I would like to discuss with the Commission are
Energy City's newest program: "Project Conserve" and the Heritage Preservation
Commission's (HPC) plan for restoring the water tower on Jackson Ave.
"Project Conserve" is a program geared toward working with 30 Elk River families in a
pilot project to conserve electric, natural gas, water, gasoline and reduce waste. The
Utility Commission can show their support by taking part in this pilot project and
helping with the expenses of the program. I am requesting the Utility Commission cost
share for Vance's time on this project which is estimated to be $2,500 for the project. I
am also requesting the Utility Commission purchase some prizes as incentives. Some of
the items discussed include low flow shower heads, CFLs, moisture probes, etc. I see
this program helping both the City and ERMU by educating residents on the importance
of conservation.
The HPC met on August 21, 2008 and during the meeting discussed the possibility of
raising funds to preserve the water tower on Jackson Ave. Jeff Gongoll, Community
Development Director has been assigned to work with local organizations about
fundraising opportunities for the water tower. The HPC respectfully requests a
12-month (September 2008 -September 2009) timeframe to try and raise the funding to
preserve the water tower.
Thanks again for allowing me to speak at the September 9 Utility Commission meeting
and for being proactive in preserving our environment and history.
