Item: 7
cty
E
fiver
MEMORANDUM
TO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bill Maertz, Park and Recreation Director
DATE: December 10, 2008
SUBJECT: Directors Report
The Rotary Club sponsored, River Walk project is complete. The graded areas were
hydro seeded with a low maintenance prairie mix. Staff removed decade's worth of
old tires and road debris. The view of the project from the Parrish Ave. Bridge is
quite nice and should be even better once the prairie and landscaping is blooming
next summer. See Attached. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
Rotary for their participation in this project and to remind people about the annual
Taste of Elk River event held in May.
• The Senior Activity Center celebrated its first year of operation on December 3"'.
Attendance started out strong last year and has grown steadily reaching an average
attendance of 68 in November, 2008.
• Thanks to Commissioner Anderson and the volunteers from the Elk River Nordic
Ski Club for their hard work, a new ski trail will be available at Woodland Trails Park
this winter. The new trail is named Stony Rollers and is on the east end of the trail
system.
• The Great Northern Trail paving project is on schedule for construction in summer
2009. Surveying and preliminary engineering was completed in November.
• Flooding of outdoor rinks has begun and it is anticipated given cold weather that
they will be ready for skating the week of December 8`". Handke Stadium warming
house will be staffed beginning December 8.
