City of

**Item 5.7?*

MEMORANDUM

TO:

Mayor & City Council

FROM:
DATE:

Pat Klaers, City ~~istrator
April 29, 1996

SUBJECT: Consider Sidewalk Projects

The city has had two recent requests for sidewalks. Both requests are
similar, reasonable and related to development projects. One request is city
initiated.

The first proposal, which is city initiated, is the completion of the sidewalk on
the west side of Gates Avenue, north of Fourth Street. This is a "missing
piece" of sidewalk and will compliment the proposed St. Andrews project.
Please see the attached map for the location of this sidewalk.

The second request comes from Mr. Dare and is for a sidewalk on the west
side of King Avenue, south of Main Street. This sidewalk was originally
anticipated to be part of the river pathway project as a link to Main Street,
but it appears that the project in this area will be delayed for at least a few
years. Nonetheless, the sidewalk is needed now for safety reasons more than
anything else, and it is the only piece of sidewalk missing in the entire
downtown area. Also, there is no sidewalk on the east side of King. This
proposal will have a direct benefit to Date's Funeral Service, Inc., but it is
also a benefit to the public walking in the area, and the downtown customers.
It should be noted that Mr. Dare will complete the sodding in the right-of-
way between the sidewalk and the curb.

The cost of a sidewalk is in the neighborhood of $2 per square foot.
Sidewalks are 6 feet wide so the cost should be about $12 per linear foot. The
Gates sidewalk is about 525 feet and the King sidewalk is about 170 feet.
The total project should be in the $8,500 range and the source of funding will
be the Street Reserves.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the City Council approve the expenditure of funds
from the Street Reserve Fund for the Gates Avenue and King Street
sidewalks. The city will then accept the low responsible quote when
considering the spring timing for the projects.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
