REQUEST FOR ACTION
To Item Number
Cih~ Council 5.7.
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Public Works June 2, 2008 Terry IV4aurer, Pub&c Works Director
Item Description Reviewed by
Trott Brook Parkway Traffic Cahming Lori ohnson, Cita.ldministratox
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Staff seeks direction concerning implementation of traffic calming on Trott Brook Parkway.
BackgroundlDiscussion
Late h 2007, the Cia- Council received a petition from the'1'xott Brook Patens neighborhood
asking for speed abatement measures to be implemented on Trott Brook Parl~va5-. ° t die e~pril
14, 2008 City Council workshop, we presented several different options fox proposed traffic
calving implementation. ?mot that point in time, the City Council directed us to come back with
more speciFic information and cost regarding striping of "Trott Brook Parkway and possible
installation of driver feedback speed lrnit signs. The City Council also gave direction for staff to
prepare a draft traffic calving policy. ~7ork on that policy is continuing and that document will
be preserved at a liter date.
Trott Brook Parl~vay is a slightly wider roadway than typical, being 38 feet wide, to accommodate
heavier traffic movements to and from CS1~H 12 and~or CSAH 13. The striping proposal would
place a centerline skip stripe along Trott Brook Parkway. Also, the edge Ines evould have a sold
white stnpe delncadng the navel lanes and idcntifynrg the shoulder uea. Trott Brook Parkway is
approximately 1-1 voles long from CSAH 13 to CS1yH 12. To place these three stripes along the
total length of the roadway would cost approximately $2,000. It is important to note drat once
the roadway is sniped, it will need to be re-striped on a periodic basis. 'Typically, we get
approximately three years ont of a sriphg before it has to be redone.
The driver feedback speed llvit signs are approximately $10,000 each installed. If we proceed
with the l2stallation of these signs, it would be out proposal that the city would purchase them
directly from 3M and hire a contractor to install the signs permanently at each end of Trott Brook
Parkway.
Financial Impact
To install two driver feedback speed litmit signs and vo totally snipe Trott Brook Parkway would
cost approximately $22,000. Staff s recommendation is to use Street Improvement Resei~e Ponds
for an~~ or all of the traffic calming improvements discussed in this memo.
Attachments -None
