MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Nicola Blake-Bradley, Environmental Technician
DATE: April 4, 2008
SUBJECT: U'SAgain Clothing Bin Collection Update
The green and white checkered U'SAgain Clothing/'Textile/Shoe collection bins were placed
at five City owned locations in December 2007 with City Council approval on November 19,
2007. The locations were chosen fox maximum visibility and convenience to the residents.
The xepxesentarives fox U'SAgain cautioned staff when placing the bins at the sites that
winter months axe typically the slowest collection months due to cold weather and lack of
"Spring ox Fall Cleaning". In the first quarter of the year, nearly two tons of material has
been diverted from the landfill. As an update, the following amounts have been collected
from each of the locations (year to date):
Ciry Hall 6851bs.
Ice Arena 350 lbs.
Lion's Park 3601bs.
Activity Centex 1,4801bs.
Westbound Liquor 920 lbs.
Total 3,795 lbs.
Please note, per the agreement with U'SAgain, the City of Elk River will receive
compensation of two cents per pound of material collected from the bins. As Spring arrives,
the numbers are anticipated to be affected in a very positive way. It appears that the Activity
Center and Westbound Liquor may have better numbers due to convenience for the elderly
to utilize the service. As per City Council direction, Staff will continue to monitor the
appearance of the collection bins and address any complaints as they arise.
