*ITEM 3.6.* <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />TO: <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />Mayor and City Council <br /> <br />Scott Harlicker, Senior Planner <br /> <br />January 14, 2002 <br /> <br />Request to attend National Planning Conference <br /> <br />Overview <br /> <br />Each year the American Planning Association (APA) organizes a national conference for <br />planning professionals, elected and appointed officials and interested citizens. The <br />conference offers a wide variety of workshops covering various planning issues. This year's <br />conference, to be held April 13-17, 2002 in Chicago, includes workshops covering: <br /> <br />· Downtown Development <br />· Commuter and Light Rail Planning <br />· Transit Oriented Developments <br />· Legal Issues <br />· Geographic Information Systems (GIS) <br />· Urban Design and Cluster Development <br />· Transportation Planning <br />· Sustainable Development and Sprawl <br /> <br />The 2002 Planning Department budget programmed expenses to cover attendance for one <br />staff person, typically the Director of Planning, at the national conference. For 2002, staff <br />requests that the Senior Planner be granted permission to attend the conference. The <br />Planning Commission budget included expenses for two Planning Commissioners to attend <br />the national conference, as there are specific workshops geared towards Planning <br />Commissioners. In the past the Council has approved sending staff and two Planning <br />Commission members to the same conference. <br /> <br />Request <br /> <br />The City Council is asked to approve sending the Senior Planner and two Planning <br />Commission members to the National Planning Conference to be held April 13-17, 2000 in <br />Chicago. <br /> <br /> <br />
