REQUEST FOR ACTION
To Item Number
Ci Council 8.1.
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Administrarion March 17, 2008 Lori ohnson, Ci Administrator
Item Description Reviewed by
Discuss Community Development Director Interviews
Reviewed by
Action Requested
The Council is asked to discuss the interview process fox the community development director position.
Background/Discussion
The deadline fox submitting an application for community development director was Mazch 7. Eight
applications were received for the position. At the Match 10 Worksession, I gave the Council a brief
update on the status of the applications and distributed a summary of each applicant's education and
experience background. As you know, the names of the applicants are not public information until
selected for an interview so the information presented was very general.
Although we did not discuss the applicants individually or their backgrounds in detail at the meeting, I
stated there were four, maybe five, applicants that I would consider for an interview. The two strongest
candidates on paper have previous experience either as a director of community development or plaaming
manager and executive director experience in a community development department. I recommend the
Council interview these two applicants because of their recent directly related community development
department experience. The Council could then select two ox three other candidates to interview. This
would provide a good mix of applicants from which to choose.
I further suggested that the Council may want to appoint two council members to serve on the first
interview committee to narrow the applicant pool to two that would be interviewed by the full Council.
This avoids the interviews being conducted in an open meeting. However, at least one council member
expressed an interest in having the full Council at the first interviews. If you decide to proceed with more
than two council members participating in the first interview, two interview meeting dates should be
selected. The second date would be an alternate in case the candidates aze not available on the first date.
Monday March 31 could be the first meeting date as that would allow enough time to schedule and
prepare for the interviews.
Finally, as you deliberate this on Monday, keep in mind that the names are confidential unless they are
selected for an interview. Once the final selection of candidates is made and the process is set, I will
prepare interview questions and finalize the schedule with the interviewees.
S:\Council\Lori\2008\Cotnmututy Development Director interview process 03 17 OB.doc
