MEMORANDUM

TO:

Park and Recreation Commission

FROM:

Bill Maertz, Parks and Recreation Director

DATE:

August 9, 2006

SUBJECT:

Park System Master Plan Update

ITEM:
2007 Park System Master Plan

BACKGROUND:
The park system master plan has not been updated since 1997. During the joint City
Council/Park Commission, meeting in April it was agreed upon that updating this plan
should be a priority in 2007. In addition to the master plan update, staff believes that
individual park master plans should be reviewed to insure that they will meet the needs of a
growing population. Specifically, these plans should be examined to see if they are ambitious
enough as far as the level of development and infrastructure.

It is proposed that capital spending in 2007 be relatively modest with a focus put on citizen
input and long range planning. That being said, flexibility must be maintained should unique
opportunities for land acquisition present themselves.

ACTION REQUESTED:
Give staff direction as to whether the Commission agrees with this course of action.
