City of Elk River
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Agenda Section Meeting Date
Worksession une 12,2006
Item Description
Street Department Temporary Office

Item Number
5.6

Prepared by
Phil Hals, Street Su erintendent
Reviewed by

Introduction

In February, Street Department Staff discussed some future needs for the Public Works site with the City
Council.

Discussion
The issues include additional office space, a large vehicle storage building, a canopy over the fuel island
and a roof system over our used oil collection tank. As Staff has considered options and phasing, it has
become evident that we need professional guidance for the development of a 20 year facility. The
following are options that could handle the space shortage for the short term:

Option #1- Build an outside addition to our present building:
Pros:
o Could be done soon
o Convenient access to existing facilities
Cons:
o Most likely would not be in the right location when the new building is added
o Are funds available now to do such a project

Option #2 - Do a stand alone office that would someday be incorporated into the new building design:
Pros:
o Could be done soon
o Office would be located conveniendy when the new building is completed
Cons:
o Would require much duplication which adds extra expense
o Would not have convenient access to existing facilities
o Are funds available now to do such a project

Option #3 - Do a temporary office near our existing offices:
Pros:
o Rather inexpensive (between $10,000 and $20,000)
o Could be done soon
o Could be sold when no longer needed
Cons:
o Is a temporary structure
o Not physically attached to existing building
o Short term solution only
