City of Elk River
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Agenda Section Meeting Date
Administration Ma 1,2006
Item Description
Re lacement of 1b.ree Overhead Doors at Fire Station 1

Item Number
7.1.

Prepared by
Bruce A. West, Fire Chief
Reviewed by

Introduction
As part of the addition to Fire Station #1, new overhead garage doors were installed and four of the
original garage doors from the station's original construction in 1972 were replaced. There are three
overhead garage doors remaining that were tlot part of this replacement and I would like City Council
approval to replace these remaining three garage doors.

Discus_ion
The Elk River Fire Department Fire Station #1 is nearing completion of the new addition which will
house the two ambulances, offices, storage, and day room. Fire Station #1 was originally built in 1972
with a 1989 addition atld now the most current 2006 addition. As part of the construction process for the
new addition, four overhead doors on the original 1972 addition were replaced. This is the third set of
overhead doors during the life of the 1972 original fire station building.

The rem~ining three overhead doors on the 1989 addition to Station #1 have been examined by our
maintenance staff, St. Cloud Overhead Door Company, and the Garage Door Store as to the condition
and life expectancy of the 17 -year old doors. All three of the doors are recommended for replacement
due to the age of the doors, the windows are in need of replacement, and the middle door has already
started to delaminate. With the replacement of the remaining three overhead doors, all of the StatiOtl #1
overhead doors will have been replaced and the need for future maintenance or future replacement will
be alleviated at this time. I have requested bids from St. Cloud Overhead Door Company (the supplier of
the doors for the addition to Station #1) and the Garage Door Store to ensure a competitive price for the
replacement of the three overhead doors at Fire Station #1. The difference in price between the two
quotes for the exact door and window style as the recently installed doors is $105.00. It should be noted
that the Garage Door Store will not be able to exactly match the color of the existittg doors at Station #1.

Financial Impact
I have discussed the overhead door replacement with City Administrator Lori Johnson and the funding
will come from the 2005 fund balance reserve for capital outlay.

Attachments
· Quote from St. Cloud Overhead Door Company
· Quote from the Garage Door Store
· Pictures of existittg garage doors at Fire Station #1

C:\Documents and Settings\bwest\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLK3BD\St.ation 1 Garage Doors.doc
