Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Meeting Minutes <br />May 13, 2025 <br />Page 1 <br /> <br />ELK RIVER MUNICIPAL UTILITIES <br />REGULAR MEETING OF THE UTILITIES COMMISSION <br />HELD AT THE UTILITIES CONFERENCE ROOM <br /> <br />May 13, 2025 <br /> <br />Members Present: Chair John Dietz, Vice Chair Mary Stewart, Commissioners Matt Westgaard, <br />and Nick Zerwas <br />ERMU Staff Present: Mark Hanson, General Manager <br /> Sara Youngs, Administrations Director <br />Melissa Karpinski, Finance Manager <br />Tony Mauren, Governance & Communications Manager <br />Tom Geiser, Operations Director <br />Chris Sumstad, Electric Superintendent <br /> Mike Tietz, Technical Services Superintendent <br /> Dave Ninow, Water Superintendent <br />Jenny Foss, Communications & Administrative Coordinator <br />Megan Zachman, Human Resources Generalist <br />Others Present: Jared Shepherd, Attorney; Cal Portner, City Administrator; Owen Westberg, <br />ERMU Scholarship Winner; Andrew Madson, ERMU Scholarship Winner <br /> <br />1.0 GOVERNANCE <br /> <br />1.1 Call Meeting to Order <br /> <br /> The regular meeting of the Utilities Commission was called to order at 3:30 p.m. by Chair Dietz. <br /> <br />1.2 Pledge of Allegiance <br /> <br /> The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. <br /> <br />1.3 Consider the Agenda <br /> <br /> Moved by Commissioner Stewart and seconded by Commissioner Westgaard to approve the <br />May 13, 2025, agenda. Motion carried 4-0. <br /> <br />1.4 Recognition of Employee Longevity – Scott Thoreson, 32 Years <br /> <br />Mr. Sumstad presented Mr. Thoreson to be recognized for 32 years of employment with <br />ERMU, with 5 years in his current role as line crew foreperson. Mr. Sumstad explained that Mr. <br />Thoreson was the company’s current longest serving staff member, has seen the service <br />territory grow significantly, and is active in mentoring and teaching peers in the utilities. Mr. <br />Sumstad noted that Mr. Thoreson oversees ten lineworkers who have collective experience of <br />60 years. <br />38
