e

--

81i ~~~flJon/td

July.l2, 1983

I. The meeting was called to order by Mike O'Brien. Members present
were Darrell Mack, Ken Nelson and Rich Barakat.

II. Previous meeting's minutes were read and approved after a change
was made to item IV. A.

III. Treasurer's report was read and approved.

e

eV.

IV. Old Business:

A. In addition to continuing the 1983 activities in 1984, the
following activities we~e discussed;~

1. evening programs
2. soccer
3. gynmastics
4. canoeing
5. tubing
6. city sponsored tournament or race, i.e. horseshoes,
10 K race, cross-country skiing, canoe race, etc.

The need for some additional evening activities during the summer
is because children of two working parents are unable to part-
icipate in certain programs. This item will be discussed with
Dennis Carlson to see what possibilities might exist.

Most of the discussion focused on the potential for an Elk River
annual competition event. Since the July 4th celebration was
successful and will probably become an annual event, it was thought
that the Recreation Board should also participate by sponsoring
a coincident activity. Mike will discuss this item with Bob
Middaugh to see if the .City would be interested. (Subsequent to
our meeting, I contacted Bob and he does support this effort.)

Mike will send a letter to Dennis Carlson outlining the proposed
activities for the 1984 program.

B. With the addition of Rich Barakat to the Board, the Board is
at 7 members. Mike will send a letter to Bob requesting that the
Council confirm the present Board membership. Only Darrell and
Ken have been previously appointed.

C. As of July 11, about 510 participants are registered in the
1983 summer program. This number is slightly higher than anticipated,
but it does not pose a problem. The overall budget is in good shape
and it certainly appears that the first year will be successful.

New Business:

A. Mike received a phone call from Harold Gramstad regarding the
proposed Lion's park. It appears that the Recreation Board will
be involved in planning the park so that Board sponsored activities
can occur in the park.
