To Item Number
Multipurpose Facility Advisory Commission 4.1
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Presentation October 9, 2023 Tim Dalton, FT Center Superintendent
Item Description Reviewed by
FT Center Energy Audit Joe Stremcha, Assistant City Administrator
Reviewed by

Background/Discussion
On October 2, 2023, Administrations Director Sarah Youngs provided an overview to the City Council of an
energy audit conducted by a consulting group contracted through Elk River Municipal Utilities. The audit surveyed
and inspected the facility operating systems to ensure optimum efficiency and to identify processes or operations
that can further conserve energy. Utilities are a large expense at the 150,000 square foot facility as the 2022 electric
bill was nearly $300,000 and the natural gas bill was over $135,000.

Takeaways:
 The facility is operating efficiently.
 Identified feasible annual cost saving opportunities through minimal investment totaling $21,512.79.
 Lower kWh/SF than similar facilities in Plymouth and Minnetonka.
 Some strategies to improve energy efficiency were identified, are being reviewed for implementation.
 HVAC system has a large impact on the energy consumption of the facility.
 Phased activation of large energy consuming equipment would reduce the cost of electricity.
 A technical consultant can develop a strategy for phased equipment activation with limited impact on
facility operations.
 Ice cooling costs are relatively steady regardless of the number of rinks operating.
o The compressor (cooling) system runs much the same with one sheet or two.
o The circulation pumps can be controlled for each rink.
o Pumps are much less costly to operate than compressors.

Financial Impact
Potential opportunities to reduce budget expenses.

Mission/Policy/Goal
Responsible and cost-effective operations of the Facility.

Attachments
4.1 ERMU Energy Audit Findings

The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional

service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity.
Updated: August 2020
