Request for Action

To Item Number
Economic Development Authority 7.2
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
General Business August 21, 2023 Joshua Mollan, Economic Development Specialist
Item Description Reviewed by
Beautification Committee and Public Art Committee Brent O’Neil, Economic Development Director
Restructuring
Reviewed by
Cal Portner, City Administrator

Action Requested
Merge, by motion, the Beautification Committee and Public Art Committee to form a single committee.

Background/Discussion
The Beautification Committee regularly meets to market and select the City Beautification Award and promote
community beautification efforts. The Public Art Committee meets on an as-needed basis to facilitate special
projects and provide input on public art installations. It has not met since the unveiling of Slipstream in 2021.
Staff has proposed the two committees consider joining together as one and recently a joint meeting of both the
Beautification and Public Art Committees was held to discuss the feasibility of combining the two committees.

The committee members present felt the two committees share a similar focus and working as one would add
elevated purpose and involvement of committee members. Both groups were in favor of joining as one group to
conquer the goals of each committee.

As both committees have unfilled vacancies, the merging of the two committees and maintaining existing
membership would bring the combined membership count to seven: Ryan Hardin, Deb Hjermstad, Melissa
McAlpine, Michael Niziolek, Sharon Tracy, Dan Tveite, and Jennifer Wagner

The new committee intends to meet monthly.

Financial Impact
N/A

Mission/Policy/Goal
Support and recognize public art initiatives and business beautification efforts.

Attachments
None

The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional

service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity.
Updated: January 2023
