Memorandum

To: Parks and Recreation Commission

From: Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director

Date: October 5, 2022

Subject: Director’s Report

This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to recent collaborations, strategic
planning, staff changes/developments, and park operations.

Orono Park
When the pickleball courts opened, staff received a few requests to install restrooms next to the courts.
Some users feel the restroom across the street is too far away. If we place one at the courts, we will need
an ADA accessible unit on a concrete pad.
Due to a stone production delay, the capstone for the park pavilion will be installed around October 21,
2022. This is several months later than we expected.
Park Restrooms
We will try to keep the Orono, YAC and LJWP restrooms open until October 15. Depending on demand
and pavilion reservation needs, we could add portable toilets if necessary. We have a few shelters reserved
through the middle of October. A portable toilet will be kept year-round at Orono Park next to the skate
park.
CR 44
The CR 44 open house last week yielded about 40 different interested visitors to receive information and
give input. Comments and input gathered at the open house will be shared by Assistant County Engineer
David Roedel at the November 9, 2022, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting.
Rivers Edge Commons Park Dock
Monday, September 26th was the dedication of the new Rivers Edge Dock. Special thanks to Shannon
Tatro and Chris Carlson who led the efforts to raise the funds and install the dock. Chris committed half
the price of the dock through a donation from the Carlson Family Lightshield Foundation. Both Mayor
John Dietz and Councilmember Wagner expressed their appreciation for private businesses and citizens
getting involved in community projects like this one.
Removal of the downtown dock for the winter is scheduled for October 18.
Item: 9
