Elk River
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
ERMU Commission Theresa Slominski—Finance & Office Manager
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
November 14, 2017 6.1b
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
ACTION REQUESTED:
None
DISCUSSION:
• I have been in contact with our auditors to sign our audit engagement letter for 2017, and
plan upcoming audit dates. Typically the auditors are onsite one day in December for the
preliminary work, but this year they scheduled a date in early January instead, January 8,
2018. The regular fieldwork will be completed March 1 and 2, 2018. We have our
electric physical inventory date set for Thursday, December 28,2017, and the auditors
will join us briefly for some testing of their own.
• Last year at this time, we were deep in discussions with NISC regarding our challenges
with the software not being conducive to our fund accounting needs. I am happy to
report that this initiative has been moving along, and with the last NISC quarterly
upgrade we had a change that significantly improved the process in posting cash register
transactions to the GL. We have also been able to provide feedback on other processes
that they are working on for a target final implementation in fall of 2018.
• We will have our insurance open enrollment meetings on the Wednesday following the
commission meeting,November 15, 2017. To accommodate everyone we hold two
meetings, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. These meetings allow us the
opportunity to review with staff the changes in switching from SunLife benefits to
Principal and Delta benefits, as well as any industry changes related to medical insurance
benefits. Staff can make any changes with enrollment, and can also enroll in our
cafeteria plan flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care. We will have a
Delta Dental representative here to help field questions, as well a representative from
Blue Cross Blue Shield(BCBS).
88
