August 9, 2021
Chris Kerzman
Engineering Manager
Elk River Municipal Utilities
1705 Main Street
Elk River, MN 55330-0430
RE: Elk River Municipal Utilities Field Services Building - Bid Package #5A2
Recommendations for Award of Contract
Dear Mr. Kerzman;
On August 9, 2021, bids were received at the Elk River Municipal Utilities offices for bid
package 5A2 of the Elk River Municipal Utilities – Field Services Facility Expansion
project. Despite early interest by multiple subcontractors in the rebidding of this portion
of the project, only one bid was received at the time of the bid. Briese Iron Works, Inc.
was the sole bidder with a bid of $421,150.00.
While the default of Thornberg Steel has been a negative impact to the budget of this
project, by working directly with the steel joist and decking contractor RJM has been able
to keep the increase from Briese’s bid on the original bid day to their bid today to less
than a $40,000 increase. Given the volatile materials market conditions over the past few
months we feel as though this is a positive aspect to Briese’s current bid.
At this time RJM has completed its review of Briese Iron Work’s bid we recommend to
the Utilities Commission that they approve the award of the following contracts at this
time.
BID CATEGORY AWARD AMOUNT
5A2 – Struct.
