UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO:FROM:
ERMU Commission Mike Tietz –Technical Services Superintendent
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
November 10, 2020 6.1i
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
ACTION REQUESTED:
None
DISCUSSION:
• In October, the locators processed503 locate tickets. These consistedof 8 emergency
tickets, 402 normal tickets, 2 non-excavation tickets, 55 updated tickets, 16
cancellations, 7 boundary surveys, and 13 locate meets. This resulted in a 22.6%
decrease of tickets from the previous month and an 8.9% increase over the prior year.
The locators will begin GPSing efforts again as locates begin to taper off.

• Electrical Technicians completed 233 service order tasks, updated the power bill,
performed weekly substation checks, dealt with customer meter issues and off-peak
concerns. The electrical techs completed the task of disconnecting the remaining off-
peak radios on the system. The team collected information utilizing our GIS software to
record what types of appliances had been previously controlled and are still present.
This information will be used to help us develop energy savings programs in the future.

• On October 22, staff ran generators #1, #2 & #4 and used city water for cooling of the
generators again without any issues. Staff attempted to turn over Engine #3 but was
unsuccessful. We will continue to use city water through the winter months until lake
Orono returns to normal levels.

• Mapping department continues to update points and attributes for our systems assets
within the ESRI ArcView GIS system. Staff continues to assistthe water department with
on-call rotation support.

• Chris Kerzman and I attended theMinnesota PowerSystems Conference (MIPSYCON)
th
Annual Conference virtually via ZOOM. There was a lot of great information shared
56
by numerous presenters during the 3-dayconference. Topics ranged from Metering and
Substations to Distribution Automation and Emerging Technologies. I found oneof the
topics, Transportation Electrification Transition Challenges, to be extremely informative
and thought provoking as the US continues to move toward electric fleet vehicles. Thank
you for the opportunity to attend these conferences and broaden our knowledge.
______________________________________________________________________________
Page 1 of 1
99
