L5.5
Library Services Coordinator Report -Board Meeting— 1 28 2020
In children's programming news, we offered our Hour of Code class again during National Computer
Science week in December, and it was well attended. For January through May we will be offering STEM
classes in collaboration with Sherburne County 4-H/U of MN Extension office. In support of these
classes, and our regular Lego/STEM club, which meets once per month, we are in the process of
purchasing some additional STEM toys and games with the funds raised during our Locally Growin
campaign in 2019. Some of these items will be added to the circulating collection and some will be used
exclusively in Elk River for programs. On April 21, we will be offering an author visit from MN children's
author Mary Casanova, and the Magic of Dr. Seuss show with Magician Bob on March 12, which was
very well -attended and well-received last year. We are also trying a Yoga Storytime for children and
adults in January and in May. This program has been successful in some other branches, so we wanted
to "give it a try" here. Stay tuned!
In teen news, we are re -vamping of our teen book club and re -naming it T.N.T-Teen Night Together. We
will be offering a wider variety of activities such as games, trivia contests, movie nights, crafts, and book
discussions, etc. to try to attract more teens to participate. Our first monthly meeting is January 30. We
will also be offering two Escape Rooms for teens in March and May.
Winter Reading Program for adults is in full swing, and I am pleased to report that after 10 days, we
have about 25 of our 60 patrons registered who have registered through our new on-line program,
Beanstack! We will be drawing for prizes from both Beanstack registrations and in-person registrations,
and we are pleased to be offering an additional grand prize of a Kindle Fire -thanks to our Friends of the
Elk River Library!
In adult program news, in December we had some successful adult programs including music events
from the MN Carolers and Andrew Walesch, as well as a Crafternoon class making unique ornaments.
The feedback and attendance were great! We are offering a music event with MN Guitar Quartet on
Thurs. Jan. 23, an author panel on Sat. Feb. 1, two Crafternoon classes in Jan. and Feb. with local artists
teaching knitting and jewelry making. Our Self -Defense class on Tues. Jan. 14 had 25 enthusiastic people
attending, and we received great feedback and multiple requests to offer this again. We are thankful for
the collaboration with Sherburne County Sheriff's Dept. for this class. We are pleased to be offering a
"How to be Safe Online" class for adults on March 24, and a photography class by Doug Ohman on May
19. Some of these upcoming classes were suggestions from patrons after an informal survey we did in
early 2019.
For an update on our C.I.P. items, I have contacted a local upholstery company for an estimate on repair
of two pieces of upholstered furniture. After I receive that estimate, I will contact the board to
determine the course of action to move forward. This is my first priority for 2020 CIP items.
