The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity
Request for Action

To
Parks and Recreation Commission
Item Number
7.2
Agenda Section
Action Item
Meeting Date
December 11, 2019
Prepared by
Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director
Item Description
Woodland Trails Regional Park Nature Play and
Shelter
Reviewed by
Cal Portner, City Administrator
Reviewed by

Action Requested
Discussion of Woodland Trails Regional Park (WTRP) Nature Play and Shelter

Recommend, by motion, the final designs of the WTRP Nature Play and Shelter.

Background/Discussion
The WTRP Grant Planning Committee reviewed 75% design review of the nature play features and
shelter at the May 8, 2019, planning meeting. It was discussed last spring that the project would go out to
bid this winter for a 2020 spring/summer construction.

WSB has refined the design concepts and unit prices keeping the grant project at its projected
construction budget. This will be done by focusing the phases of construction on the priority areas
recommended by the WTRP Planning Committee (shown in dashed red circles on the attached final
design concept). These areas and the entire nature play area, including the alternates, have been planned
to keep costs down through donations and volunteers.

WSB Senior Landscape Architect Candace Amberg will present the designs. The next step is to present
the Commission recommendations at the January 6, 2020, City Council meeting. Final construction
documents and bidding services should be completed early 2020 for late winter bidding.

Financial Impact
The construction budget for the shelter and nature play is $325,000.

Attachments
WTRP project layouts
WTRP final design concepts
