They are no longer interested in using Lion John Weight Park since the
bandshell was recently demolished. They are requesting a flagpole be installed behind the stage for their
ceremony. It was also discussed with a flagpole the national anthem could be played at city concerts and
other events.

During initial and expansion design meetings for Rivers Edge Commons Park, a flagpole was not
considered because of the Mississippi River scenic and river views. It was also discussed a flagpole could
be a problematic background for wedding receptions.

Does the Parks and Recreation Commissin want to consider istalling a flag pole at Rivers Edge
Commons Park?

Financial Impact
The cost for a flagpole starts at $4,000. This does not include installation costs or electric. Lighting is
required under the Flag Protection Act to be properly flown at night, unless it is taken down. The
addition of a flagpole will require additional Parks and Recreation expenses for flag replacement, staff
overtime for flag raising in the event of half-mast days and pole repair.

Attachments
 Rivers Edge Commons Park Aerials
