We do this one year ahead of schedule so we have time to
repair any valves before the projects begin. On one of the valves we exercised the
packing bolts broke causing a leak. The operators came in at 4 am to excavate the valve
and minimize the interruption to local businesses.
• The water department has continued to locate and validate existing areas of the
distribution system, and GPS new areas for addition to the map.
• We have also been working on a water meter audit. This will ensure we have
accountability of the water meters in the system, and that we are billing correctly.
• The Auburn Tower went out for bid on August 20. The bids will be opened at 1:00 p.m.
on September 10.
• Well#5 is back up and running after the lightning strike to the Auburn Tower on August
24. Our water operators repaired our equipment, and assisted the wastewater department
to get their SCADA antenna replaced.
• I volunteered at the water softening exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair. The focus of the
exhibit was to bring attention to the damage that water softeners do to the environment. I
also educated fairgoers on how to set their water softeners to minimize the amount of
salty discharge to the sanitary sewers from their softeners.
• I will be assuming the duties and responsibilities of the Minnesota American Water
Works Association (MN AWWA) Section Chair on September 20. The section has
roughly 1,000 members from utilities across the state.
211
