ACH, CITY PLANNER DATE : DECEMBER 28, 1993 SUBJECT: STAFF UPDATES FUTURE MEETING DATES In the month of January and February, there are two holidays that coincide with dates when the City Council typically holds their regular Council meeting. Therefore, the Council has rescheduled those Council meetings to Tuesday, January 18, and Thursday, February 17 . The meeting scheduled on January 18 happens to occur on the same night the Planning Commission holds its workshop. Since there will be some planning issues on the City Council ' s agenda for that night ' s meeting, I will not be available to attend the Planning Commission workshop. I know the Commission wanted to have Terry Maurer attend a Planning Commission workshop to make a brief presentation on the updates to the transportation, storm drainage, and utility plans, however, Terry will also have to attend that January City Council meeting. If the Commission desires, I could schedule Terry Maurer for the February 15 Planning Commission workshop to make the presentation I described above. 411 At the December 20 meeting, the City Council scheduled meeting dates to meet with various Commissions and Boards . The City Council identified Monday, February 7 , as the preferred date to meet with the Planning Commission to discuss various issues that will be upcoming in 1994 . Certainly, one of those issue that will be discussed will be the update of the Growth Management Plan. This meeting will be a great opportunity to hear ideas from both the Planning Commission and City Council . NEWS ARTICLES Attached are articles from the Minneapolis paper that discuss planning issues in other communities . The topic of the articles are essentially directed towards the issue of suburban communities closing their door to low and moderate income housing opportunities . This particular subject has been discussed for several years and recently reached the State Legislature with a proposed bill that would require communities to provide their "fair share" of low and moderate income housing opportunities . This particular issue will be discussed more and more in the future as the problems with the inner city, first ring, and, in some cases, second ring suburbs continue to have problems with an overabundance of low and moderate income housing resulting in increased crime rates and • demands on social programs .
