City of
Elk Memorandum Item: 9.2
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Tim Sevcik,Public Works Superintendent
Date: February 9, 2018
Subject: Staff Report
Skating Rinks
With the exception of the Lions John Weicht Park skating rink, the outdoor skating rinks are in
excellent shape. In 2016 and 2017 the outdoor skating season was cut short do to warm temperatures.
This year, while we have had some warm spells, overall temperatures have remained below freezing
allowing for good ice making and the best rinks we have had in recent memory. The Lions Park rink
however did not fair well during the last warm stretch and much of the ice was lost. Due to the higher
sun angle in February it was determined to close this rink for the remainder of the winter and focus on
the other rinks to maintain their ice longer. The Parks Maintenance Staff will continue to maintain the
skating rinks as long as weather permits this winter.
Winter Tree Maintenance
The Park Maintenance Staff continues to make progress at Hillside City Park in its efforts to remove
hazardous and diseased trees and non-native buckthorn and honeysuckle. The crew has cleared
approximately 10 of the 26 acres this winter and has a lot of hard work still ahead to complete the
necessary tree removals prior to the spring thaw. Last week the Streets Division Staff assisted in tree
removal within the parks by removing the storm damaged trees in Oak Savanna Park. As time and
weather permit, the Streets Division will continue to assist the Parks Maintenance Division with tree
work throughout the parks to meet the goals for this winter.
PO / FRED IT
N:\Departments\Parks and Recreation\Commission\Packets\2018\02-1418 PRC Packet\9.2 Public Works NATURE
Superintendents Report.docx
