Approve,by motion, for the city to hold an Elk River community summer festival event.
Background/Discussion
Over the past several years, discussions have been held regarding a community summer festival event.
Recently, a local student requested the City Council consider a city event. Recreation staff has been
working to develop an open street type event downtown in the summer of 2018. Staff presented some
event concepts to the City Council at a work session on January 16. The Council directed staff to further
refine the ideas and bring them back.
The Council received an update at their February 5,2018,work session. Overall, the Council supported
the event concept, but concerns were expressed about holding the event in 2018 due to the short
timetable. Staff feel that an event plan has been developed that is of a size and scale accomplishable in
2018. Key aspects of the event include:
• Held in downtown Elk River
• Saturday,July 7,2018
• Afternoon to evening
• Fireworks normally held on July 4 will be moved to coincide with event
• Feature services provided by city and community organizations
• Contests, games, music, arts, craft and food vendors
• Family oriented
Staff will be presenting more details as well as possible partners for the event
Financial Impact
• $1,000 has been allocated in the 2018 for a signature event
Attachments
N/A
The Elk River Vision
A welcoming community with revolutionary and spirited resourcefulness, exceptional
111E1E1 1 r
service, and community engagement that encourages and inspires prosperity /► TURE
