Item: 8
Elk'>*(44Memorandum
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Date: January 10, 2018
Subject: Director's Report
This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to collaborations, strategic
planning, staff changes/developments,and park operations.
Elk Rivers Ice Arena and Lion John Weicht Park Facilities Design
The Ice Arena Design Committee has nearly comleted its work on the schematic design phase of the
Ice Arena. After discussions with the school district, consideration of schedules and effects on user
groups and fresh eyes from our construction management team,a"Revised" option has been
developed to better accommodate some of the challenges that were identified with the original
option.
City Council provided diretion at the December 18 meeting to proceed with the "Revised" option
that is attached. The revised option includes keeping the current"Olmypic"building for dryland
training and field turf space. Final schematics will be completed by the end of January and then
design development will take three weeks. Construction is scheduled to start this early June 2018.
The city continues to work with the Lions Club on options for Lion Park Center and Lions John
Weicht Park.
Park/Street Divisions Merger
With the recent retirement of Steet Superintdnent Mark Thompson, the city has merged the Street
and Park maintenance divisions. Park Superintendent Tim Sevcick now oversees both divisions. He
currently reports to two department directors—Suzanne Fischer and me.
Open Street Elk River
Staff are currently investigating an Open Streets program for Main Street Downtown. More than a
street festival, Open Street Elk River gives residents an opportunity to explore downtown and local
businesses in a safe, fun and family-friendly way. The program will also provide opportunites to
showcase city departments, youth sports organizations and local service groups.
David Zakem Resignation
Park Maintenance Worker David Zakem just resigned his Park Maintenance Worker position,
effective January 18. We plan to advertise soon to fill his vacancy.
rIeMENE ® sl
N:\Departments\Parks and Recreation\Commission\Packets\2018\01-10-18 PRC Packet\Directors Report 1-10-18.docx I NATURE
