Pi4'L .,
Elk .........._,
Memorandum Item: 8.2
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Tim Sevcik,Park Superintendent
Date: December 8, 2017
Subject: Staff Report
Athletic Complexes
The dugout kits have been installed at Oak Knoll and the Youth Athletic Complex. Fencing and the
block seat walls will be installed during the winter and spring of 2018.
Skating Rinks
Staff began making ice this week at both the Handke Pit and Lions John Weicht Park skating rinks.
With daytime temperatures still reaching the high 20's, staff will be working overnight shifts for the next
week to continue to build ice at these two locations with the goal to have these rinks open by December
22,just in time for the Christmas holiday weekend. Work on neighborhood rinks will begin once
weather conditions permit.
Hillside City Park
Staff began removing buckthorn as well as hazardous and diseased trees at Hillside City Park. The
primary focus for this winter is section 2 of the park, the southwestern 25 acres, where there are over
400 standing dead trees. Section 2 will be closed throughout this winter to allow for the crews to safety
remove the trees. The trail in section 2 will remain closed until reconstruction of the trails in sections 1
and 2 in the summer of 2018.
Volunteer Efforts
The Hillside City Park Stewards,Harriet and Mark Holasek, along with other MORC volunteers
continue to do an exceptional job maintaining the trails within the park. Hillside has seen its largest
volume of users since sections 3 and 4 were reconstructed this past summer, and the trails look as
though they were completed just this past week. Mark and Harriet also ensure that both the Facebook
page and MORC forums are updated regularly to alert riders of trail conditions.
PONEREI 11
N:\Departments\Parks and Recreation\Commission\Packets\2017\12-13-17 PRC Packet\8.2 Park Superintendents NATURE
Report.docx
