We have moved into our fall season, and while it is a little quieter in
the library these days, we have a lot to look forward to! Before I review upcoming events, here
is a re-cap of the Summer Reading Program:
Kids Program-Age 3 to 6th grade:
859 Registered children--1, 248 reading records completed
Teen Program-6th to 12th grade:
171 Registered teens--830 reading coupons completed
Baby/Toddler Program-Age 0-3
136 Registered--22 reading records completed
In other children's program news, we had 18 people attend our Fair-Themed Family Story time
in August, where we gave away two tickets to the MN State Fair. Thanks to our Friends of the
Library Group for donating the tickets! Our Junior Master Gardener program had excellent
attendance all summer long, averaging 20 children per session. We held our 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten Graduation ceremony, where we celebrated 11 children reading 1000 books! We
are looking forward to our Family Story time event on October 14, where our own Elk River Fire
and Police personnel will be reading the stories. Thanks to ERPD and ERFD!
Our focus for fall is on our teen and adult patrons, and I am pleased to share our programming
plans for September, October and November. We will be having a movie night on Sept 28,
during Banned Books Week, and showing "Lord of the Rings", a movie based on the
banned/challenged book by J.R.R. Tolkien. On October 10, we have an author visit, from Joe
Kimball, the author of"Secrets of the Congdon Mansion". Our"Military History Mysteries"
event will be on October 26 with a representative of the MN Military History Museum tracing
the history of military artifacts in a show and tell format. In November, we will have a
musician/storyteller, Arna Rennan, a harpist, Chris Ward, a crafting event to make holiday
ornaments with Jen Anfinson, and an event to make "Sensory Bags" for community members
with dementia. We are excited about these programs and hope our patrons will be too!
Our Friends of the Library group is having their book sale on October 12 through October 14.
We were lucky to receive a large donation of 30 boxes of books from a retired teacher, so the
Friends will have an abundance of books available at great prices. Check it out!
Elk River Library will be doing a few extra outreach events this fall as well. We have the last of
our Farmers Market days on October 5. I will be doing a Fall Literacy/STEM outreach to a
local private preschool in October, and I will be attending the "Community Connect" Event,
hosted by Sherburne County Area United Way on October 19. I will be attending a local
support group, hosted at the Elk River Senior Center, to get the word out about our"Sensory
Bags" event.
Sorry I missed you all at the meeting...I am traveling to Rochester to the Minnesota Library
Conference. I hope to be able to share some great ideas when I return. See you in November!
