The <br /> complex was built largely by the lead of our previous street superintendent with a lot of assistance from <br /> volunteers and professional services provided by Professional Turf and Renovation (Hopko). <br /> The irrigation system was installed by city staff and consisted largely of residential-grade equipment. <br /> From 1987 to 1992, the system drew water from Lake Orono. The use of lake water resulted in the <br /> introduction of micro-organisms, sand, and gravel into the irrigation lines. <br /> In 1992, a 4-inch well with a 3-hp pump was drilled to provide for a cleaner and more efficient water <br /> source. While sufficient for the residential irrigation system, the well consistently pulled fine sand and <br /> deposited into the irrigation lines. In 2012, a spin down filter and variable frequency drive were added to <br /> stop sand from entering. <br /> During spring startup, staff found over half of the irrigation heads failed to operate. An irrigation <br /> contractor inspected the system and identified sand,gravel,rust scale, and organic materials in the <br /> irrigation lines resulting in the failed system and requiring replacement. <br /> Central Irrigation designed a new commercial-grade irrigation system and received three quotes for the <br /> installation. Additionally,it was identified that upgrades to the well are required to provide sufficient <br /> water flow for the system. Option #1 upgrades the well with a 10-hp pump. Option #2 requires drilling <br /> a new 6-inch well with a 20-hp pump. <br /> Staff recommends Option #2 as 10-hp pumps are not typically designed for 4-inch wells and may result <br /> in premature failure of the well requiring drilling of a new well in the future. <br /> Financial Impact <br /> This replacement project was not planned nor budgeted for 2017. The Park Improvement Fund may <br /> have adequate funding if planned and budgeted project estimates are accurate and project contingencies <br /> are not needed.
