5.8
Library Services Coordinator Report
Board Meeting 8-1-2017
Summer has been a busy time at GRRL-Elk River. We have over 1100 children, including 200+
teens, participating in our Summer Reading Program! Yeah! We have already given away many
prizes, including a book to every child when they turn in their first reading slip. The summer
reading program has also generated great traffic to our weekly/monthly passive programs going
on in the library. We are excited to see how the rest of the summer goes.
In other children's program news, our story times continue to have excellent attendance, and
generate a busy level of activity in the library every Monday and Wednesday morning. We also
had good attendance at the magic show by the Great Brodini in June, and our Lego class, and our
duct tape class, which filled up to the number of registrations allowed. The Junior Master
Gardeners class has also been a big hit again this summer, averaging 20+kids per week. We
hope we are seeing the results in our landscapes and gardening boxes outside! We are over half
full for the Creature Encounters event on July 20-thanks to the City of Elk River for sponsoring
this event.
For adult programs, we have continued to offer Acoustic Music Night & Adult Book Club, both
of which are developing steady and enthusiastic audiences. As of this writing, we are having Jeff
Bianchi, a classical guitarist in the library tonight. We are hoping for a large audience!
In outreach news, we have had two Library Days at the Elk River Farmer's Market, and we have
met over 100+people, and shared"what's going on at the library" as well as giving away some
books and other prizes to children, courtesy of our Friends of the Library group. We are looking
forward to the first Thursday of the month, in August, September and October.
I am excited to share our fall/winter programming plans. We will be having a movie night in
September, during Banned Books Week, to celebrate and"Stand up for your Right to Read". In
October we have an author visit, from Joe Kimball, the author of "Secrets of the Congdon
Mansion", and a"Military History Mysteries" event with a representative of the MN Military
History Museum. In addition, we will be having a special story time event on Saturday Oct. 14,
where members of the Elk River Police and Fire Departments will be reading the stories at the
library, and then the children will have a chance to walk across the street to the Elk River
Fire/Police Open House to tour a fire truck, police car, and participate in other activities. Special
thanks to Chief Cunningham and Chief Nierenhausen for helping me coordinate this event!
Summer is speeding by...here's to a great end of summer, and beginning of fall!
