The ordinance currently requires five acres of
land and a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for lots within the Urban Service District to have chickens.
Outside of the Urban Service District, chickens are permitted on properties less than five acres in size
with a CUP. If a property is greater than five acres in size outside of the Urban Service District, chickens
are permitted and the number of chickens can be doubled with a CUP. On all properties,if the property
lot size and required permitting is obtained, the property is permitted to have 0.01 animal units per one
acres of fenced pasture land or 100 chickens per one acre of fenced pasture land.
Staff brought this information to the City Council during a work session and received direction to look
into a possible amendment. A survey requesting resident feedback was also posted to the city's social
media page to gauge support in permitting chickens on residential properties of all sizes.
Planning Commission
During the Planning Commission meeting on March 28, 2017, three people spoke. Two live within the
Urban Service District and the other lives outside the urban service district. All three were in favor of
allowing chickens and provided valuable feedback for changes as we move forward with the amendment.
Discussions took place on a number of regulations being proposed and items not yet considered. The
commission directed staff to conduct more research and modify the proposed ordinance.
The commission left the public hearing open, and postponed action on the item until April 25, 2017.
Financial Impact
None
Attachments
None
POWERED 6T
AR
