rl( -"'(
( II
eity of ~
Ell{ RiverTO:

MEMORANDUM

INJ:-Q
~4f.t,1'/ot\'

Mayor & City Council

FROM:

Bruce West, Fire Chief

DATE:

March 26, 1999

SUBJECT: Firefighter Attendance at the National
Fire Academy

Firefighter training is available for Elk River firefighters not only locally and
statewide, with sectional fire schools and state fire school, but also at the national
fire academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. During 1998, the Elk River Fire
Department was fortunate enough to send four of its personnel to the National
Fire Academy to attend firefighter training.

e

The opportunity to attend the National Fire Academy is a diamond in the rough
for fire departments throughout the United States. The cost of attending the
National Fire Academy is, and continues to be, one of the best values for local fire
departments. The National Fire Academy reimburses the cost of the airfare for
firefighters who are attending the training at the academy. The room, tuition,
and books are also paid for by our federal government and the National Fire
Academy. The only cost to the city and the fire department for a firefighter
attending the National Fire Academy is for meals in the amount of $180.00.

As fire chief of the Elk River Fire Department I am always encouraging any
firefighter to possibly take advantage of this outstanding opportunity to attend
the National Fire Academy for one of its training courses. Not only is this an
outstanding opportunity to receive tremendous training, but it is also a
networking opportunity to visit with firefighters throughout the United States.
On April 12, Firefighter and part time Fire Inspector Clifford Anderson will be
attending the National Fire Academy and will be enrolled in a course entitled
"Fire Inspection Principles." The Fire Inspection. Principles course is a very
detailed class covering the fire code process, blueprint reading, the
interconnection of the building and fire codes, and many other topics in reference
to fire inspections.

e

I have personally attended the National Fire Academy numerous times and have
taken the Fire Inspection Principles course. I feel this course is an excellent
opportunity and learning experience for any person attending the academy. If
you have any questions in reference to the above issue, please feel free to call me
at the Elk River Fire Department, 441-4919.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
