rCI ~'\)
( ~
tfi{

Item #4.1.

MEMORANDUM

FROM:

Mayor/City Council
Pat Klaers, City Administrator

Bruce A. West W N
Fire Chief Vll

DATE:

March 15, 1999

SUBJECT: Addition of Firefighters

The Elk River Fire Department has been in the process of adding firefighters due to
the resignation and change of residency of past firefighter members. During the past
three months, we have advertised, screened, and interviewed potential candidates for
the position of Paid On-Call Firefighter for the Elk River Fire Department. With the
process now complete, I am bringing to the council the names of four candidates to
fill the position of Paid On-Call Firefighter.

.

The Elk River Fire Department Personnel Committee has selected Cory Altman,
Nate Dittbenner, Gary Lore, and Mark Wallace. The Elk River Fire Department
Personnel Committee believes we have four excellent firefighter candidates for the
position of Paid On-Call Firefighter. With the approval of the City Council, and
completion of the firefighter physicals and stress test, the new candidates shall start
with the Elk River Fire Department approximately March 22, 1999. With the
addition of the four new firefighter candidates, this will fill the roster of firefighters
to 35 members.

Assistant Fire Chief, Mike Trunnell, will be in attendance at the March 15, 1999
council meeting to answer any questions you may have in reference to the addition of
four firefighter candidates to the Elk River Fire Department. I cannot be in
attendance at the March 15 meeting, as I will be on vacation.

The process of recruitment and retention of firefighters has become a very difficult
task for the Elk River Fire Department. Increased family commitments and
increased time commitments to the Elk River Fire Department in reference to
training and fire calls has increased the problem of retention of firefighters not only
in the Elk River Fire Department, but in all fire departments in the state of
Minnesota.

.

13065 Orono Parkway · P.O.
