5.8
Libmiy Services Coordinator Report
To: Elk River Library Board
From: Will Hollerich, LSC
Date: September, 2016
New Story Time Staff
Robin Schaible took over Mondays' City-sponsored Toddler story times in September after
preparation with Elk River branch staff and GRRL Patron Services Librarian Connie Laing from
St. Cloud. One of our Library Friends suggested she apply for the position, and she interviewed
with Will and Library Assistant Pamela Wagman. Robin has a decade of experience giving story
times at her church, but she sat in on library story times for different ages and from different
presenters before starting. She also met with Connie to discuss the early literacy standards used
by Great River Regional Library, Every Child Ready to Read. She made an immediate
connection with the children attending her first day, and we feel very fortunate to have her.
Update: 2016 Summer Reading Program
Our SRP which had 1,337 participants was a huge success, thanks to the efforts of all of our
staff, volunteers, and Friends of the Library. Over the nine week program that ended August 13 '
944 children recorded 6,445 hours of reading over the nine week program and 241 teens
recorded 4,132 hours of reading. That's over 10,000 hours combined —well over a year's worth!
We also had 152 babies or toddlers participate, among whom 56 finished the reading related
activities on their "Read to Me" worksheet. Friends of the Library sponsored incentives for the
program including a celebration at the end and books purchased from Scholastic.
Coming Up: New Aide; Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale
In August Elk River's Library Aide Anna Granlund resigned to pursue college full-time. We
have had a number of people coming in to help fill shifts in her absence. Interviews for the open
position were completed September 91'. Administration is moving fast to complete paperwork for
the recruitment of our top candidate, but things may be delayed due to the fire in St. Cloud.
The Friends of the Elk River Library's fall book sale will be held in the meeting room from
October 13-15. Donated books will be sold at reasonable prices and proceeds benefit our library
branch. Please come and support the Friends and your community's library during any of the sale
hours. The sale is held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 13, from 10:00 am to 5:00
pm on Friday, October 14, and from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 15.
1
