of
Elk
Memorandum
River
To: Parks and Recreation Commission
From: Michael Hecker, Parks and Recreation Director
Date: September 14, 2016
Subject: Director's Report
This report is a monthly highlight of department activities related to collaboration, strategic
planning, staff changes/developments, and park operations.
River Edge Commons Park Expansion
The construction on Rivers Edge Park expansion started in late August. The contractor, Sunram,is
currently dealing with erosion issues caused in early September from the excessive rainfall. Safety
fencing and signs have been posted. The underground utility work is currently taking place.
City Council approved change order requests on September 6 to enhance the park beyond the
original scope City Council approved in April. This includes the installation of WiFi, 220v power
for cable television and expanding the west staircase to 8 feet in width. The Sherburne-Wright
Cable Commission staff is very interested in the 220v power and WiFi to broadcast live from the
park. The EDA staff was able to receive a grant for the WiFi. Staff recommends increasing the
width of the new west staircase from its original 6.5 feet to 8 feet to provide for a better aisle way
for wedding processions. There is no impact to the General Fund since separate funding sources
were made available for the changes.
Woodland Trails (Regional) Park
Having successfully completed the extensive and thorough process to become a regional park
(including the completion of the Woodland Trails Park Master Plan that was adopted by City
Council in July—attached for your files),we were eligible to submit a funding application before the
deadline date of September 2, 2016. Staff submitted projects with a total cost over$500,000 as
outlined in the master plan. The projects include a children's play area, general site amenities,
construction of a new storage garage, wayfinding, a picnic shelter and a new archery range.
Great Northern Trail Regional Meeting
Barry Wendorf Greater MN Regional Parks and Trails Commissioner are leading an effort to fmd
out how the Great Norther Trail will fit within the Greater MN Regional Park and Trail System.
The first meeting to gather plans is scheduled for Thursday, September 15 at the Princeton City Hall
Council Room.
POPEREB BY
N:\Departments\Parks and Recreation\Commission\Packets\2016\09-14-16 PRC Packet\Director's Report 9-14-16.docx NATURE
