,If Request for Action
River
To Item Number
Parks and Recreation Commission 6.1
Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by
Action Item August 10,2016 Steve Benoit,Recreation Manager
Item Description Reviewed by
Orono Park Skate Park Project Michael Hecker,Parks and Recreation Director
Reviewed by
Action Requested
Discuss the Orono Park Skate Park design proposal.
Adopt,by motion, the Orono Park Skate Park design with one of the following two options:
1) Adopt the plan as indicated on the attached design.
2) Adopt the plan with the modification of adjusting the location towards the north into the current
power line corridor.
Background/Discussion
Spohn Ranch Skateparks, the firm retained to design the Orono Park Skate park, has completed the latest
draft of the proposed park. The plan was developed from community feedback received at two
workshop meetings and a Facebook Page designed specifically for the skate park project. Overall the
design has been well received by potential users of the park. The park utilizes a concrete design with
features highly desired by skaters that focused on"good flow". Also, the park utilizes a design intended
to compliment surrounding features of Orono Park.
One key discussion from the skate park committee is whether or not to shift the park towards the North
into the power line corridor. The benefit of this relocation is to provide more flexibility for trail
development from the future trail which will be installed on the Hwy 10 bridge over Orono Lake. The
disadvantage of this approach is the cost which is estimated at$45,000—$50,000.
The total construction cost estimate for the park is $370,187.
Financial Impact
Construction cost: $370,187
Additional cost to relocate park to the north: $45,000—$50,000
1 / ■ E 1 E 1 1 1
NAME
