Elk River
Municipal Utilities UTILITIES COMMISSION MEETING
TO: FROM:
Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission Theresa Slominski—Finance and Office Manager
John Dietz—Chair
Al Nadeau—Vice Chair
Daryl Thompson—Trustee
MEETING DATE: AGENDA ITEM NUMBER:
August 9, 2016 6.1b
SUBJECT:
Staff Update
DISCUSSION:
As noted on the agenda, we have hired an Accountant, Melissa Karpinski, who will be starting
August 9th. We received a total of 32 applications and held 3 interviews on July 18th and 19th.
Melissa is a CPA and lives in Linwood, MN and we are excited to have her join our team at
ERMU. Our other Accountant, Jenny Biorn, has done a terrific job of handling the tasks of two
staff in the interim.
Shutoffs for August were conducted on Thursday, August 4th. There were a total of 55 this time.
Of note, typically we are only able to get to the worst offenders for past due accounts and so
people with the higher balances are turned off. This summer we have been able to turn more
people off and reach those who haven't paid for several months but have smaller balances; such
as apartments. This speaks volumes to the hard work of the Technical Services Department and
the Credit and Collections Specialist.
August 22nd I will be attending our City, County, Other Government Agency meeting for our
medical insurance pool and will be receiving our renewal at that time. I have been forewarned
that our experience has high usage this renewal and our increase will be significant. The range
for increases in the pool is 0% - 19%. Also, Blue Cross Blue Shield is undergoing a software
conversion so they are requesting final renewal decisions from the agencies by October 15th. I
believe the Wage and Benefits Committee will need to do some work to bring options to the
Commission for evaluation prior to that decision being made. Obviously, there will be more to
come in September.
Jessica Rahn and Christy Schallock attended the Fred Pryor Seminars Microsoft Excel Basics
Training Course July 27th in St. Cloud, MN. Their education reports are attached.
El
rIVEREI itA
Page 1 of 2 ATURE
Reliable Public
Power Provider POWEREo To SERVE
72
