The new site should increase use of the self- checkout machine and allow staff closer access to it if a patron needs assistance with it. By reducing some of the load of basic checkout from public service staff, our Library Assistants should be able to provide better, more in-depth service to the public than before. The third Assistant scheduled can do outreach to people in the community who don't currently use the library through public presentations, school visits, etc. They can also provide "roving" reference/information service to patrons, helping at public Internet stations, in the stacks with the catalog, and on patrons' own e-readers or other devices. We are currently putting the finishing touches on a new weekly schedule for the Library Assistants that takes into consideration the changed desk plan. We're a little over halfway through the Winter Reading Program (which runs Jan. 2 — Feb. 29 this year) for teens and adults, but you can still register online or at the desk, to read for chances to win incentives like coffee mugs or gift cards from local businesses. AARP Tax Aide hosted by our library branch has begun again. Volunteer tax preparers are here 9:30 am — 12:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday through April 12. Assistance is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis. Anyone is eligible,but AARP is targeting low-to moderate-income taxpayers, especially those 60 and older. Trivia: in the collection snapshot 1/112016, Elk River had over $700,000 worth of materials checked in and available. (This includes books, audiobooks,DVDs, music CDs,and magazines.)
