The Minnesota Department of <br /> Jobs and Training assisted in this endeavor. The preliminary <br /> findings are as follows: <br /> As of June, 1993, there were approximately 5,662 jobs <br /> (covered by unemployment insurance) in Elk River. <br /> - This compares to 11,823 jobs in Sherburne County for the <br /> same period. In short, Elk River possesses approximately <br /> 48% of all jobs in the County that are covered by <br /> unemployment insurance. <br /> - These estimates do not include persons who are <br /> • self-employed or work only on a commission basis . <br /> Four major categories manufacturing, wholesale/retail <br /> trade, services, and government comprise just over 79% of <br /> the estimated jobs in Elk River. State-wide, these four <br /> categories comprise about 85% of the jobs . <br /> - Elk River's manufacturing base is on par with the <br /> state-wide estimate of 17 . 8% for similar occupations . <br /> However, nearly 63% of Sherburne County' s manufacturing <br /> jobs are located in Elk River. <br /> - State, local, and federal government jobs comprise nearly <br /> 19% of all jobs in Elk River and about 93% (998 of 1,073 <br /> jobs) of the government jobs are attributable to "local" <br /> government. By definition, the School District is <br /> included in this category as well as County employees. <br /> With Elk River being the .County seat, one would expect a <br /> larger than average number of employees in the "local <br /> government" category. <br /> Service jobs comprise nearly 18% ( 1,009 of 5,662 ) of the <br /> Elk River jobs; this compares to a state-wide average of <br /> 27 . 65% of all state-wide jobs . Likely professions under <br /> the category of "services" include auto repair and <br /> services, miscellaneous repair services, motion pictures, <br /> health services, legal services, hotels, personal <br /> services, and business services, etc. <br /> P.O.
