<br />Request for Action <br /> <br /> <br />To Item Number <br /> <br />Mayor and City Council 4.12 <br />Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by <br /> <br />ConsentMarch 7, 2016Lauren Wipper, Human Resource Representative <br />Item Description Reviewed by <br />Hiring of Planner Zack Carlton, Planning Manager <br />Reviewed by <br />Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> <br />Action Requested <br /> <br />Approve, by motion, the hiring of BrieAnna Simon for the position of Planner effective March 22, 2016. <br /> <br />Background/Discussion <br /> <br />When Community Operations and Development Deputy Director Jeremy Barnhart resigned, City <br />Administrator Portner proposed and City Council approved a slight reorganization to the Planning <br />Division. Rather than fill the Deputy Director position, we updated our Planning Manager position and <br />recruited from within. Zack Carlton was promoted to that position and Chris Leeseberg was moved out <br />of his Planner/Park Planner position into a Senior Planner position. The final step in the Planning <br />Division reorganization was to hire a new employee to fill a Planner position. <br /> <br />We went to market in January and received 14 applications. We interview five candidates and <br />recommend BrieAnna Simon for the Planner position. Ms. Simon has been working in Transportation <br />Planning for SRF Consulting Group for the last two years. Prior to that, she had internships with the <br />Metropolitan Council, City of Mankato, and Habitat for Humanity of South Central Minnesota. Ms. <br />Simon holds a bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Studies and a master’s degree in Urban and <br />Regional Planning. <br /> <br />Ms. Simon will start at step B of pay grade 7. Provided satisfactory performance, she will be eligible for a <br />step increase on July 1, 2017.
