ELK RIVER ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY 41/ MEMORANDUM TO: Economic Development Authority FROM: Marc Nevinski, Assistant etor of Economic Development DATE: June 14, 1999 SUBJECT: Business Retention & Expansion Survey Issue Staff has developed a business retention and expansion(BRE) survey to be implemented this summer. The program will include meeting with the city's larger industrial businesses, completing a survey, and using the aggregate results to provide information and help identify businesses with a high potential for future expansion. Background A BRE is an economic development tool used to assess the status of a • community's businesses, learn about plans or challenges, and to develop a stronger relationship between the business community and local government. More specifically, we will be seeking information on each firm's experiences operating in a tight labor market and their opinion of city services. Additionally, we will be seeking predictive information as to each company's plans for expanding, closing, or relocating in the near future. One important tenant of BRE protocol is to involve government and community officials, as well as other volunteers, in the interview process. Participation by such individuals helps to communicate to our businesses the community's interest in their growth and success. A list of scheduled interviews will periodically be sent to EDA members inviting them to accompany staff on interviews.
