Mayor Dietz to read the proclamation.
2. Mayor and City Council to receive the ERMU history report, 2014 ERMU Annual Report, and
the 2014 Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA) Annual Report.
Background/Discussion
In June of 1915, F.D. Waterman incorporated Elk River Power&Light (ERP&L). Today Elk River is
one of only 125 cities in Minnesota and one of approximately 2,000 cities in the nation to own their own
electric utility. Although legally possible, the municipalization of an electric system in today's world would
have significant financial, political, and legal challenges. Most cities that have electric utilities have had
them since the electrification of our country.
The efforts of the Village of Elk River to acquire ERP&L in 1945 took great vision by the local
leadership. This act demonstrated great commitment to local control and ERMU continues to operate
today with respect and appreciation for the benefits of local control.
Recent years have seen significate change for ERMU. The local decision to join MMPA in lieu of
participating in the Big Stone II coal power plant or joining with other power suppliers is clearly one of
the most important decisions made. The decision to expand the electric service territory within city limits
may prove to be equally important. These decisions are as significant as those made by the Village
Council in 1945 to acquire the electric system. The community can take great pride in the Utilities
Commission and the City Council for their leadership and commitment towards the future in regard to
these decisions. These recent decisions are highlighted in the attached 2014 annual reports.
It is with great respect for past leadership and community support that ERMU looks to celebrate our 100
years of service. The Utilities Commission authorized the development of a history report to document
our 100-year past. ERMU has experienced both good and bad times and it is important to remember
these in an effort to repeat the good and avoid the bad. This report is presented to Council to share in
remembering our past, and to encourage collaboration for a future of growth.
Please join in celebrating ERMU's 100 years of service. And please attend the community celebration on
Thursday,August 27, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m.,at the Sherburne County Fairgrounds.
