�j <br /> Elk = - Request for Action <br /> River <br /> To Item Number <br /> Mayor and City Council 11.2 <br /> Agenda Section Meeting Date Prepared by <br /> Worksession Aril 20, 2015 Kristin Mroz, Environmental Technician <br /> Item Description Reviewed by <br /> Elk River Sustainable Community Award Jeremy Barnhart, Deputy Director COD <br /> Reviewed by <br /> Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> Action Requested <br /> Review and discuss the proposed "Elk River Sustainable Community Award" program. <br /> Background/Discussion <br /> In honor of Earth Day on April 22, it has been proposed that a"Sustainable Community Award" <br /> program be initiated in the City of Elk River which would commend sustainable actions within our <br /> community by individuals, groups, and/or businesses. The city is host to numerous sustainability efforts <br /> daily and those actions should be recognized. This program will act similarly to the "Volunteer of the <br /> Month Award" and be based off of nominations by elected officials, staff, city commissioners, <br /> community members, and groups. <br /> The selected City of Elk River Sustainable Community Award nominee(s) are committed to representing <br /> the "Powered by Nature" and "Energy City" themes of the City of Elk River through voluntary efforts in <br /> one of the following categories: <br /> • Increase in Recycling and/or Organics Recycling <br /> • Energy Efficiency and/or Renewable Energy <br /> • Green Space, Native Vegetation, Invasive Species Control, and/or Wildlife Habitat <br /> Improvements <br /> • Clean Transportation <br /> • Water Quality Improvements and/or Stormwater BMPs <br /> • Sustainability Education and/or Outreach <br /> Nominations should be made for direct, hands-on efforts and the work completed should demonstrate a <br /> benefit to the City of Elk River.
