Elk River
Municipal Utilities
13069 Orono Parkway phone: 763.441.2020
Elk River,MN 55330 Fax:763.441.8099
January 2, 2007
To: Elk River Municipal Utilities Commission
Jerry Takle
John Dietz
Jim Tralle
From: Bryan Adams
Subject: Alternate Water Service Line Material
The current approved materials for water service lines are type K. copper for 1"diameter to
2" diameter and 150 lb class ductile iron pipe (DIP) for greater than 2"diameter.
Due to the cost, thief problem and decreasing quality of K. copper, many of the contractors
working in Elk River request use of other water service line material.
Elk River Municipal Utilities has been using high density polyethylene (HDPE)water mains
for some time. Going to HDPE service lines also makes good sense as an alternate to K.
copper. Most other communities allow alternate materials to K. copper as well and it is
generally the HDPE type materials. We are suggesting a totally fuse system where some
communities allow a compression fitting system. The attached drawing reflects the 3
different service line conditions. They are as follows:
1)DIP main—K. Copper Service Line
2) DIP main—HDPE Service Line
3)HDPE main—HDPE Service Line
Staff recommends amending section 104 of the water rules to allow HDPE service lines.
