John Cunningham, Fire Chief <br />Reviewed by <br />Cal Portner, City Administrator <br /> <br />Action Requested <br /> <br />Approve, by motion, the hiring of the following on-call firefighters, effective March 19, 2015. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Trent Collins Justin Ryti <br /> <br /> <br />Michael Kaden Anthony Seibert <br /> <br /> <br />Michael Kelleher Kenneth Tietz <br /> <br /> <br />Philip Luitjens <br /> <br />Background/Discussion <br /> <br />After a thorough recruitment and selection process consisting of physical ability testing and interviews, <br />the aforementioned individuals are presented to join the ranks of the Elk River Fire Department as <br />probationary on-call firefighters. The most recent recruitment had 18 applicants, of which 14 were <br />interviewed. Seven candidates moved forward from the background checks and completed their medical <br />screening. <br /> <br />Upon approval, these seven probationary firefighters will begin the Elk River Fire Academy, an in-house <br />training program that will prepare them for state certification testing. Modeled after a similar program in <br />Anoka County, the program is designed to teach not only the fundamental skills of firefighting but will <br />also cover topics such as pride/honor, local governance, county operations, and other pertinent skills. <br /> <br />Once the probationary firefighters have successfully completed the requirements of the academy and <br />their probation period, the graduates will be administered the Oath of Office and will receive their <br />badges. <br /> <br />Financial Impact <br /> <br />Probationary firefighters will be compensated $8 hour in accordance with the city’s pay plan, until <br />August 01, 2015, when an increase to Minnesota’s minimum wage will be implemented.
