A
Item# 8c
tyof
lk •
River
MEMORANDUM
TO: Park& Recreation Commission
FROM: Phil Hats, Street/Park Superintend nt -
DATE: October 13, 1998
SUBJECT: Archery Range Update
Staff has been gathering information on existing archery ranges, but we are not prepared
to bring forward a site design or location recommendation at this time. The following are
comments on existing archery ranges:
Rochester
The site sits in a natural crater type location of an existing park. The range has been in
existence for 15 years with no incidents. The range has 10 different shooting stations and
• the target area is back dropped with"Batts"(a product similar to that of a hay bale)that
are purchased from a Minneapolis based business, American Excelsior. The annual cost
of these batts is approximately$2,000. The length of the range is approximately 50-60
yards. The site requires little maintenance, and the overall operational cost is low. The
busiest use months are August through October. It was suggested to staff that Hennepin
and Ramsey County might have ranges for us to research.
Arden Hills
The archery range at Arden Hills has 10 lanes of various lengths from 15 to 50 yards.
The shooting is down hill, and trees and shrubs separate the shooting lanes.
Bloomington(France Ave.)
The shooting lanes are approximately 15 yards apart, with trees and brush separating the
shooting lanes.
Recommendation
Staff will continue to gather information on site design with recommendations on
possible locations and designs. In addition, staff recommends inviting an archery
enthusiast to an informational meeting with the Park&Recreation Commission. The
development and funding will need to be discussed at a future meeting.
•
13065 Orono Parkway • P.O.
