ITEM: #10.
Elk River Park and Recreation Commission
Community Recreation Update - August 12, 1998
•
- Skatepark: The skatepark has been paved and is ready for use. All apparatus at the
park must meet certain specifications and be periodically inspected for structural
integrity.
- BMX Development Concept: I understand that the group continues their work towards
organizing a plan for Commission /City consideration for development at Hillside park.
Until we learn what exactly the BMX groups proposal includes, we cannot determine
what all the legal and insurance ramifications will entail.
- "Youthbound": Has been open since June 26th. Attendance has been very good and
continues to increase. We have had several individuals and businesses donate a
variety of items such as, tables , chairs, TV and VCR, and several other items. On July
31st we had two local youth bands perform and the evening went very well. We will be
offering more of these special event opportunities this fall.
- Summer Recreation: Our summer programs are near completion. We had a very good
summer for outdoor recreation.
• - Fall '98 Recreation: Our Fall activities brochure will be delivered August 26th. A
sampling of opportunities includes: Jr. and Sr. High intramurals, gymnastics, open
gyms, skating lessons, non-school day events, numerous introduction to youth sports
programs, indoor walking, hayrides, and several family styled special events and
several events for teens.
- Invitation to August 31st. workshop: Attached you will find an invitation to a workshop
that has been set up cooperatively by Community Recreation, ECFE and Dist. 728
Corn. Ed. These three organizations have been working very hard at better working
together to maximize efficiencies and best utilize our resources. We also believe that
commissions such as yours would enjoy and benefit from this type of workshop and
that you will also get the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how these three
organizations relate and work together.
There is no cost to attend! (just lunch) I hope that several of you would be interested
and able to attend.
Vision for Youth Athletic Complex: The Commission should consider how you want to
proceed. I will be working with the youth associations this fall and winter planning for
next year. It would be very beneficial to have a vision that is understood by all parties
and then unite the energy towards those goals rather than acting upon "fast ideas"
• every time someone thinks of what they feel is needed.
