.-/ —\
\i -
FAk it Item#7,B.3.
y of MEMORANDUM Ri•
verTO: Park and Recreation Commission
FROM: Stephen Wensman, Planner fr
DATE: July 8, 1998
SUBJECT: Mississippi Oaks 5th Addition Park
Description
The site is located in the flood plain of the Mississippi, behind and down a
slope from the future homes of Mississippi Oaks 5th Addition. The site
consists of primarily Silver Maples providing a canopy over most of the
mostly flat tall weedy grass site. Much of the site is in the flood fringe of the
Mississippi which prohibits permanent structures. Any structures located
there will need to be removed in the event of a flood.
Attachments
• • Location map
• Topographic map
Site Issues
• Saving trees
• Screening from Neighbors
• Access to the river
• Flood way restrictions
Park Concept
Because the site is small, tree covered, and in the floodway, only one concept
has been developed. The river is the main focus of this park. A gravel path
loops around the site with a spur going up a small hill to Riverview Drive in
the Mississippi Oaks 5th neighborhood. At the street could be a small park
sign that welcomes people to the site with a few small flowering shrubs.
Around the looped trail the tall weedy grass is mowed and shade grass
introduced, (as much as is possible). The mowing will lessen the number of
insects and may make the park more usable in summer. At the river bank a
few removable benches could be installed and some picnic tables where there
III is some sun.
13065 Orono Parkway • P.O.
